| * git-pull documentation: warn about the option orderJunio C Hamano2008-03-10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | We might eventually be loosening this rule, but there is a longstanding restriction that the users currently need to be aware of. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
* | Correct git-pull documentationJay Soffian2008-02-19
|/ | | | | | | | | The --rebase option was documented in the wrong place (under MERGE STRATEGIES instead of OPTIONS). Noted the branch.<name>.rebase option. Signed-off-by: Jay Soffian <jaysoffian@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
* git-pull documentation: fix markupJunio C Hamano2008-02-11
| | | | | | | A note paragraph was mistakenly made into an indented monospace display. Noticed by Miklos Vajna. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
* pull --rebase: be cleverer with rebased upstream branchesJohannes Schindelin2008-01-26
| | | | | | | | | When the upstream branch is tracked, we can detect if that branch was rebased since it was last fetched. Teach git to use that information to rebase from the old remote head onto the new remote head. * git pull manpage: don't include -n from fetch-options.txtMiklos Vajna2008-01-25
| | | | | | | | | | | | The -n option stands for --no-summary in git pull [jes: reworded the description to avoid mentioning 'git-fetch'; also exclude '-n' conditional on git-pull -- ugly because of the missing "else" statement in asciidoc] Signed-off-by: Miklos Vajna <vmiklos@frugalware.org> Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
* Documentation: rename gitlink macro to linkgitDan McGee2008-01-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Between AsciiDoc 8.2.2 and 8.2.3, the following change was made to the stock Asciidoc configuration: @@ -149,7 +153,10 @@ # Inline macros. # Backslash prefix required for escape processing. # (?s) re flag for line spanning. -(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>\w(\w|-)*?):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + +# Explicit so they can be nested. +(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>(http|https|ftp|file|mailto|callto|image|link)):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + # Anchor: [[[id]]]. Bibliographic anchor. (?su)[\\]?\[\[\[(?P<attrlist>[\w][\w-]*?)\]\]\]=anchor3 # Anchor: [[id,xreflabel]] This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline macro template to be applied. By renaming the macro, we can avoid being matched by the wrong regex. Signed-off-by: Dan McGee <dpmcgee@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
* Teach 'git pull' about --rebaseJohannes Schindelin2007-11-28
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When calling 'git pull' with the '--rebase' option, it performs a fetch + rebase instead of a fetch + merge. This behavior is more desirable than fetch + pull when a topic branch is ready to be submitted and needs to be update. fetch + rebase might also be considered a better workflow with shared repositories in any case, or for contributors to a centrally managed repository, such as WINE's. As a convenience, you can set the default behavior for a branch by defining the config variable branch.<name>.rebase, which is interpreted as a bool. This setting can be overridden on the command line by --rebase and --no-rebase. Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
* Add urls.txt to git-clone man pageAndrew Ruder2007-07-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since git-clone is one of the many commands taking URLs to remote repositories as an argument, it should include the URL-types list from urls.txt. Split up urls.txt into urls.txt and urls-remotes.txt. The latter should be used by anything besides git-clone where a discussion of using .git/config and .git/remotes/ to name URLs just doesn't make as much sense. * War on whitespaceJunio C Hamano2007-06-07
| | | | | | | | | This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged. * Documentation/git-pull: describe default behaviour and config interactionsJunio C Hamano2007-02-08
| | | | | | | The way 'git pull' without explicit parameters work were not explained well in any existing documentation. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

* some doc updatesNicolas Pitre2007-01-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1) talk about "git merge" instead of "git pull ." 2) suggest "git repo-config" instead of directly editing config files 3) echo "URL: blah" > .git/remotes/foo is obsolete and should be "git repo-config remote.foo.url blah" 4) support for partial URL prefix has been removed (see commit ea560e6d64374ec1f6c163c276319a3da21a1345) so drop mention of it. * Documentation: update git-pull.txt for new clone behaviorJ. Bruce Fields2007-01-01
| | | | | | | | | | Update examples, stop using branch named "origin" as an example. Remove large example of use of remotes; that particular case is nicely automated by default, so it's not so pressing to explain, and we can refer to git-repo-config for the details. * Docs: move git url and remotes text to separate sectionsJ. Bruce Fields2006-02-06
| | | | | | | | | The sections on git urls and remotes files in the git-fetch, git-pull, and git-push manpages seem long enough to be worth a manpage section of their own. Signed-off-by: J. Bruce Fields <bfields@citi.umich.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
* Examples of resetting.Junio C Hamano2005-12-16
| | | | | | | | | | | Morten Welinder says examples of resetting is really about recovering from botched commit/pulls. I agree that pointers from commands that cause a reset to be needed in the first place would be very helpful. Also reset examples did not mention "pull/merge" cases. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
* Refactored merge options into separate merge-options.txt.Jon Loeliger2005-11-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Refactored fetch options into separate fetch-options.txt. Made git-merge use merge-options. Made git-fetch use fetch-options. Made git-pull use merge-options and fetch-options. Added --help option to git-pull and git-format-patch scripts. Rewrote Documentation/Makefile to dynamically determine include dependencies. * Documentation: git-fetch/pull updates.Junio C Hamano2005-11-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | We do not accept multiple <refspecs> on one Pull:/Push: line right now (we could lift this tentative workaround for the broken refnames), but we have always accepted multiple such lines, so use that form in the examples and discussion. Also explicitly mention that Octopus is made only with an explicit command line request and never from Pull: lines. Add a couple of cross references. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
* Added a few examples to git-pull man page.Jon Loeliger2005-11-04
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Clarified and added notes for pull/push refspecs. Converted to back-ticks for literal text examples. [jc: Also fixed git-pull description that still talked about its calling git-resolve or git-octopus (we do not anymore; instead we just call git-merge). BTW, I am reasonably impressed by how well "git-am -3" applied this patch, which had some conflicts because I've updated the documentation somewhat.] Signed-off-by: Jon Loeliger <jdl@freescale.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

* Document the use of "current directory" as pull source.Junio C Hamano2005-11-01
| | | | | | | | The repository to pull from can be a local repository, and as a special case the current directory can be specified to perform merges across local branches. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
* git-fetch/push/pull: documentation.Junio C Hamano2005-10-19
| | | | | | | | | The documentation was lazily sharing the argument description across these commands. Lazy may be a way of life, but that does not justify confusing others ;-). Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

* [PATCH] Documentation: Update all files to use the new gitlink: macroSergey Vlasov2005-09-20
| | | | | | | | | | | | The replacement was performed automatically by these commands: perl -pi -e 's/link:(git.+)\.html\[\1\]/gitlink:$1\[1\]/g' \ README Documentation/*.txt perl -pi -e 's/link:git\.html\[git\]/gitlink:git\[7\]/g' \ README Documentation/*.txt Signed-off-by: Sergey Vlasov <vsu@altlinux.ru> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
* Big tool rename.Junio C Hamano2005-09-07
As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future.
