* request-pull: explicitly ask tags/$name to be pulledJunio C Hamano2012-01-31
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When asking for a tag to be pulled, disambiguate by leaving tags/ prefix in front of the name of the tag. E.g. ... in the git repository at: git://example.com/git/git.git/ tags/v1.2.3 for you to fetch changes up to 123456... This way, older versions of "git pull" can be used to respond to such a request more easily, as "git pull $URL v1.2.3" did not DWIM to fetch v1.2.3 tag in older versions. Also this makes it clearer for humans that the pull request is made for a tag and he should anticipate a signed one. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When cherry-pick was written (v0.99.6~63, 2005-08-27), “git commit” was quiet, and the output from cherry-pick provided useful information about the progress of a rebase. Now next to the output from “git commit”, the cherry-pick notification is so much noise (except for the name of the picked commit). $ git cherry-pick ..topic Finished cherry-pick of 499088b. [detached HEAD 17e1ff2] Move glob module to libdpkg Author: Guillem Jover <guillem@debian.org> 8 files changed, 12 insertions(+), 9 deletions(-) rename {src => lib/dpkg}/glob.c (98%) rename {src => lib/dpkg}/glob.h (93%) Finished cherry-pick of ae947e1. [detached HEAD 058caa3] libdpkg: Add missing symbols to Versions script Author: Guillem Jover <guillem@debian.org> 1 files changed, 2 insertions(+), 0 deletions(-) $ The noise is especially troublesome when sifting through the output of a rebase or multiple cherry-pick that eventually failed. With the commit subject, it is already not hard to figure out where the commit came from. So drop the “Finished” message. * Teach rebase the --no-ff option.Marc Branchaud2010-03-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | For git-rebase.sh, --no-ff is a synonym for --force-rebase. For git-rebase--interactive.sh, --no-ff cherry-picks all the commits in the rebased branch, instead of fast-forwarding over any unchanged commits. --no-ff offers an alternative way to deal with reverted merges. Instead of "reverting the revert" you can use "rebase --no-ff" to recreate the branch with entirely new commits (they're new because at the very least the committer time is different). This obviates the need to revert the reversion, as you can re-merge the new topic branch directly. Added an addendum to revert-a-faulty-merge.txt describing the situation and how to use --no-ff to handle it. * update-hook-example: optionally allow non-fast-forwardDmitry Potapov2008-06-25
| | | | | | | | | | | Sometimes it is desirable to have non-fast-forward branches in a shared repository. A typical example of that is the 'pu' branch. This patch extends the format of allowed-users and allow-groups files by using the '+' sign at the beginning as the mark that non-fast-forward pushes are permitted to the branch. * fix update-hook-example to work with packed tag referencesDmitry Potapov2008-06-25

* Document that WebDAV doesn't need git on the server, and works over SSLMatthieu Moy2008-04-18
| | | | | | | | | | | I managed to set up a Git repository on a preconfigured WebDAV server, and using HTTPS, without installing Git on it or changing the server configuration. This works through a proxy too. This patch reflects this (it previously stated that Git was _necessary_ on the server, which isn't true). Also give a few hints to troubleshoting. * Fixed update-hook example allow-users format.Väinö Järvelä2007-09-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The example provided with the update-hook-example does not work on either bash 2.05b.0(1)-release nor 3.1.17(1)-release. The matcher did not match the lines that it advertised to match, such as: refs/heads/bw/ linus refs/heads/tmp/* * In POSIX 1003.2 regular expressions, the star (*), is not an wildcard meaning "match everything", it matches 0 or more matches of the atom preceding it. So to match "refs/heads/bw/topic-branch", the matcher should be written as "refs/heads/bw/.*" to match "refs/heads/bw/" and everything after it. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
* War on whitespaceJunio C Hamano2007-06-07
| | | | | | | | | This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged. * user-manual: move howto/using-topic-branches into manualJ. Bruce Fields2007-05-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Move howto/using-topic-branches into the user manual as an example for the "sharing development" chapter. While we're at it, remove some discussion that's covered in earlier chapters, modernize somewhat (use separate-heads setup, remotes, replace "whatchanged" by "log", etc.), and replace syntax we'd need to explain by syntax we've already covered (e.g. old..new instead of new ^old). The result may not really describe what Tony Luck does any more.... Hope that's not annoying. Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: "J. Bruce Fields" <bfields@citi.umich.edu>
* user-manual: move howto/make-dist.txt into user manualJ. Bruce Fields2007-05-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | There seems to be a perception that the howto's are bit-rotting a little. The manual might be a more visible location for some of them, and make-dist.txt seems like a good candidate to include as an example in the manual. For now, incorporate much of it verbatim. Later we may want to update the example a bit. Signed-off-by: "J. Bruce Fields" <bfields@citi.umich.edu>
* Documentation: remove howto's now incorporated into manualJ. Bruce Fields2007-05-17
| | | | | | | | | These two howto's have both been copied into the manual. I'd rather not maintain both versions if possible, and I think the user-manual will be more visible than the howto directory. (Though I wouldn't mind some duplication if people really like having them here.) Signed-off-by: "J. Bruce Fields" <bfields@citi.umich.edu>

* Documentation: shared repository management in tutorial.Junio C Hamano2005-12-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | The branch policy script I outlined was improved and polished by Carl and posted on the list twice since then. It is a shame not to pick it up, so replace the original outline in howto/update-hook-example.txt with the latest from Carl. Also talk about setting up git-shell to allow git-push/git-fetch only SSH access to a shared repository host in the tutorial. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

* Retire rev-tree.Junio C Hamano2005-09-22
| | | | | | | | Some old scripts might still use git-rev-tree, but it really is clearly inferior in every way to git-rev-list that such scripts should be fixed anyway. Fixing them should be pretty easy. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
* Big tool rename.Junio C Hamano2005-09-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future.
