* | NFSv4.1 Fix a pNFS session draining deadlockAndy Adamson2013-05-20
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | On a CB_RECALL the callback service thread flushes the inode using filemap_flush prior to scheduling the state manager thread to return the delegation. When pNFS is used and I/O has not yet gone to the data server servicing the inode, a LAYOUTGET can preceed the I/O. Unlike the async filemap_flush call, the LAYOUTGET must proceed to completion. If the state manager starts to recover data while the inode flush is sending the LAYOUTGET, a deadlock occurs as the callback service thread holds the single callback session slot until the flushing is done which blocks the state manager thread, and the state manager thread has set the session draining bit which puts the inode flush LAYOUTGET RPC to sleep on the forechannel slot table waitq. Separate the draining of the back channel from the draining of the fore channel by moving the NFS4_SESSION_DRAINING bit from session scope into the fore and back slot tables. Drain the back channel first allowing the LAYOUTGET call to proceed (and fail) so the callback service thread frees the callback slot. Then proceed with draining the forechannel. * NFSv4.1: Fix the callback 'highest_used_slotid' behaviourTrond Myklebust2011-08-04
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, there is no guarantee that we will call nfs4_cb_take_slot() even though nfs4_callback_compound() will consistently call nfs4_cb_free_slot() provided the cb_process_state has set the 'clp' field. The result is that we can trigger the BUG_ON() upon the next call to nfs4_cb_take_slot(). This patch fixes the above problem by using the slot id that was taken in the CB_SEQUENCE operation as a flag for whether or not we need to call nfs4_cb_free_slot(). It also fixes an atomicity problem: we need to set tbl->highest_used_slotid atomically with the check for NFS4_SESSION_DRAINING, otherwise we end up racing with the various tests in nfs4_begin_drain_session(). * NFS add session back channel drainingAndy Adamson2011-01-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently session draining only drains the fore channel. The back channel processing must also be drained. Use the back channel highest_slot_used to indicate that a callback is being processed by the callback thread. Move the session complete to be per channel. When the session is draininig, wait for any current back channel processing to complete and stop all new back channel processing by returning NFS4ERR_DELAY to the back channel client. Drain the back channel, then the fore channel. Signed-off-by: Andy Adamson <andros@netapp.com> Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <Trond.Myklebust@netapp.com>
* NFS refactor nfs_find_client and reference client across callback processingAndy Adamson2011-01-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Fixes a bug where the nfs_client could be freed during callback processing. Refactor nfs_find_client to use minorversion specific means to locate the correct nfs_client structure. In the NFS layer, V4.0 clients are found using the callback_ident field in the CB_COMPOUND header. V4.1 clients are found using the sessionID in the CB_SEQUENCE operation which is also compared against the sessionID associated with the back channel thread after a successful CREATE_SESSION. Each of these methods finds the one an only nfs_client associated with the incoming callback request - so nfs_find_client_next is not needed. In the RPC layer, the pg_authenticate call needs to find the nfs_client. For the v4.0 callback service, the callback identifier has not been decoded so a search by address, version, and minorversion is used. The sessionid for the sessions based callback service has (usually) not been set for the pg_authenticate on a CB_NULL call which can be sent prior to the return of a CREATE_SESSION call, so the sessionid associated with the back channel thread is not used to find the client in pg_authenticate for CB_NULL calls. Pass the referenced nfs_client to each CB_COMPOUND operation being proceesed via the new cb_process_state structure. The reference is held across cb_compound processing. Use the new cb_process_state struct to move the NFS4ERR_RETRY_UNCACHED_REP processing from process_op into nfs4_callback_sequence where it belongs. * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-30
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch.
